STEM vacancies could be filled twice over by talented maths pupils who ‘go missing’ every year
The number of promising maths pupils who ‘go missing’ once they start secondary school is almost double the number of vacancies for STEM related jobs in England.
New research suggests around 30,000 talented maths pupils are ‘disappearing’ from our school system between the ages of 11 and 16, with half of top-performing disadvantaged pupils being ‘lost’. More via The Manufacturer
Scotch whisky boosts UK economy by £7.1bn
The contribution of the Scotch Whisky industry to the UK economy reached £7.1bn in 2022.
A new report by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) also reveals the industry supports 66,000 jobs across the UK, of which 41,000 are in Scotland. More via insider.co.uk
£24m scheme to help West Midlands businesses reduce energy usage and bills
Thousands of businesses from energy intensive manufacturing firms to coffee shops and hairdressers are being offered help to cut their gas and electricity use through a £24m scheme being led by West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and WMCA chair, and Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, launched the Government-funded Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) pilot scheme at Wednesbury-based automotive components manufacturer Alucast – one of the 500 local businesses that have already signed up to the scheme. ABB acquires Sevensense, expanding leadership in next-generation AI-enabled mobile robotics
ABB has announced that it has acquired Swiss start-up Sevensense, a leading provider of AI-enabled 3D vision navigation technology for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).
Sevensense was founded in 2018 as a spin-off from Swiss technical University, ETH Zurich. More via The Manufacturer
FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics reports doubled customer base during 2023
Sheffield University tech spinout FourJaw Manufacturing Analytics doubled the number of manufacturers using its plug-and-play machine monitoring platform in 2023, according to new figures released yesterday.
The latest data also reveals that FourJaw’s installed base – the number of machines monitored by manufacturers using FourJaw technologies – increased almost threefold over the course of the year. More via Prolific North
Freeport East welcomes new Freeports Delivery Roadmap
Freeport East welcomes the UK Government’s Freeports Delivery Roadmap, designed to maximise support for inward investment, trade, and job creation.
It includes over 50 measures across transport planning, energy infrastructure, skills support, and innovation funding, alongside a new £150m fund for business investments in freeports and investment zones. More via The Manufacturer
Yorkshire fabric manufacturer hires trio of textile graduates
AW Hainsworth, a 240-year-old fabric manufacturer and woollen mill responsible for the look of iconic England, has hired three textile graduates from northern universities.
Angela Augusto, Rachael Frame, and Polly Armond are the newest additions to the Hainsworth team and part of the company’s future of textile expertise. More via FE News
The Bury Black Pudding Company taken over by UK-based Panicium
The Bury Black Pudding Company has been acquired by UK-based Panicium, a buy-and-build entity focused on the artisan food sector.
Suppling into retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons, The Bury Black Pudding Company is Panicium’s third M&A transaction, which was struck for an undisclosed sum. More via Just Food
