Full STEM programme announced for Smart Manufacturing & Engineering Week 2024

The award-winning Nineteen Group has announced a full programme of STEM activities that will take place under the banner ‘Manufacturers & Engineers of the Future’ at Smart Manufacturing & Engineering Week on 6 June at Birmingham’s NEC.

Students and apprentices are welcome on both days of the event, but the STEM programme runs on the afternoon of day two, the 6th of June. More via The Manufacturer

Car manufacturers to miss Government target for electric vehicle sales, MPs told

Car manufacturers will miss a key Government target for electric vehicle (EV) sales, MPs heard.

The share of the new car market held by pure battery electrics is predicted to be just 19.8% this year, industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) told the Commons’ Transport Select Committee. More via Shropshire Star

UK electric truck maker Tevva Motors faces administration

Tevva Motors has filed a notice to appoint administrators as it seeks to secure investment.

The move follows a failed deal with US-based vehicle manufacturer ElectraMeccanica.

Tevva has since re-engaged with a number of investors and public companies looking for a merger. More via Fleet News

Volklec to manufacture electric vehicle batteries in the UK

A new UK manufacturing business making batteries for electric vehicles Volklec has been launched, based in Coventry, West Midlands, with the aim of powering electrified mobility, and set to manufacture sustainable batteries for on-road, off-highway and track vehicles.

In an innovative UK technology collaboration, Volklec is working with UKBIC, the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre and national manufacturing development scale-up facility, which also provides skills for the growing EV battery sector. More via Renewable Energy Magazine

Till & Whitehead building on rich history to forge expansion plans

A leading UK industrial products supplier, with bases in Greater Manchester and Gloucestershire, is expanding its UK operations as it aims to boost capacity and sustainability.

Established in 1876, Bolton-based Till & Whitehead has invested in expanding its facility responsible for stocking and distributing fasteners and consumables for the window trade. Capacity at its UK Fasteners division, which is situated in Longborough is being extended by a third in response to growing demand for items ranging from window fasteners to consumables. PepsiCo invests in Pipers Crisps factory in UK

PepsiCo plans to invest £8m ($10.1m) in its Pipers Crisps manufacturing site in the UK to meet growing demand.

The funding will boost production at the potato snack factory by “nearly 80% to satisfy demand both in the UK and in the brand’s growing export market,” the US snacks giant. More via Just Food

Aston University researcher’s project part of government support to rebuild Ukraine’s energy system

An Aston University researcher’s project has been selected as part of a package of support to help rebuild Ukraine’s energy system, phase out fossil fuels and support post-war recovery.

In November 2023 it was announced that senior lecturer in engineering and technology Dr Muhammed Imran and his collaborators were to receive almost £1m from the UK government to develop and commercialise cascade heat pumps. More via The Manufacturer
