Ford lets two young women be CEOs for a day to celebrate International Day of the Girl
To celebrate this year’s International Day of the Girl, Ford welcomed two young women to take over CEO roles at its Essex HQ and London Human Centred Design Lab.
Nataly, aged 19, and 18-year-old Nicole were selected to take over the real-life roles and responsibilities of Lisa Brankin, Ford of Britain & Ireland chair and MD, and Usha Raghavachari, European Human Centred Design director. Find out more at The Manufacturer
Yorkshire manufacturer converts Savile Row tailors’ waste to create luxury wool
iinouiio – which was acquired last year by Mirfield’s global textile manufacturer Camira – has the only textile recycling capability of its kind in the UK. It has led to the innovation of a new circular, luxury wool fabric, which will be unveiled during Wool Month in October 2023.
The company collaborated with the Campaign for Wool, which was founded by His Majesty King Charles III in 2010, when he was HRH The Prince of Wales, Eco-Luxe and Scotland-based micro mill, Woven in the Bone, to create a luxury herringbone cloth, which will be showcased at Holland and Sherry on Savile Row in London.
Dr John Parkinson, Founder of iinouiio, said: “It has been an incredibly exciting project to work on and we’re delighted it will come to fruition during Wool Month, which is a key event for us to demonstrate and promote responsible textile manufacturing, with the aim of breathing new life into discarded textiles.” Find out more at The Yorkshire Post
UKRI investment to harness the power of smart data for research
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is investing £59m in Smart Data Research UK (SDR UK), a six-year programme to give researchers safe access to ‘smart data’. This is data generated through everyday interactions with the digital world, including via mobile apps, navigation systems, social media, and shopping.
Smart data offers a powerful opportunity to understand society, improve lives, and sustainably grow our economy. Analysis of smart data will provide new insights about the way we live and work. Find out more at UKRI
Electric cars drive UK MG sales to more than £1bn
MG Motors has said it is in a “very strong position to take advantage” of the shift to electric cars as it posted UK sales worth more than £1bn for 2022.
The brand, owned by Chinese company SAIC Motor Corp, said its sales volumes more than doubled thanks to demand for its electric and hybrid vehicles.
It posted bumper pre-tax profits in the UK of £54.2m for 2022, compared with £4.3m the year before.

Frog Bikes to reduce carbon emissions using of recycled aluminium
A £150,000 loan from the Development Bank of Wales’ Green Business Loan Scheme is helping Torfaen children’s bike manufacturer Frog Bikes to gear up for the production of frames and forks that will reduce carbon emissions by 5.8 per cent per bike.
The investment in 25% post -consumer recycled aluminium will save c.3.5kg of CO2 per 1kg of aluminium used, equivalent to 5.8kg of CO2 per bike. Testing shows that it is stronger than brand new aluminium. Find out more at South Wales Argus
Sunak paves the way for driverless cars in four years
Driverless cars could be delivering groceries and transporting passengers on Britain’s roads within four years under plans being considered by the Government.
The Department for Transport has drawn up plans for laws that would allow autonomous vehicles without safety drivers in the front seat, according to industry sources.
The legislation would be a slimmed down version of the much-delayed future of transport laws that are seen as unlikely to pass before the next election in their current form. Find out more at The Telegraph
HVMC developing sustainability framework for industry
The High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult’s seven centres are working together and with industry to develop a design framework that will help bring to market a new generation of products that are increasingly sustainable, by design.
The bulk of the environmental and social impacts of product are associated with its use (lifecycle) and production (supply chain) and are a result of the economic and engineering design decisions made in the design phase. Products that are sustainable from environmental, societal, and financial perspectives, will be able to anchor competitive advantage in the UK and generate economic growth. Leeds manufacturer ACS Stainless Steel Fixings to create free silhouette soldiers to mark Remembrance Day
Steel structures of Tommy soldiers will be distributed to communities across the country where they will be displayed for Remembrance Sunday services and events.
This year, in a bid to raise more awareness and funds for the Armed Forces, Leeds-based ACS Stainless Steel Fixings has drafted in two new partners: Leeds Rhinos whose players will loan their support to the campaign, as well as the ABF The Soldiers Charity who will be this year’s beneficiary. A groundbreaking traineeship programme celebrated its successful end with new apprentices being taken on at Wigan’s Kraft Heinz factory.
