Jaguar Land Rover to invest £4bn in new gigafactory: industry reaction
Following the recent turmoil surrounding Britishvolt, the UK automotive industry has been given a boost with the announcement from Jaguar Land Rover’s parent company Tata, of plans for a new battery gigafactory in Somerset.
The new £4bn electric vehicle battery factory is targeting a capacity of 40GWh (almost half of the battery production that the Faraday Institution estimates the UK will need by 2030), with production due to commence at the 616-acre Gravity Smart Campus site in Somerset as soon as 2026, to help meet the rapidly increasing demand for electric vehicles. The new Jaguar Land Rover factory is also predicted to create over 4,000 jobs and thousands more in the wider supply chain.

Bombardier Defense delivers Global 6000 aircraft to Saab’s GlobalEye Program destined to join the Swedish Air Force
Bombardier Defense recently celebrated the sixth delivery of a Global 6000 aircraft to Swedish defense supplier Saab, ready to be transformed by Saab into their Airborne Early Warning and Control solution known as GlobalEye. This aircraft will join the Swedish Air Force once Saab completes the transformation, further highlighting the illustrious capabilities of both companies in providing forward-looking solutions for nations across the globe. Biggest ever Design & Make Challenge recognises the brightest young engineering minds
The UK’s biggest independent STEM event crowned four major winners last week in a competition that attracted more than 80 pupils keen to get an insight into engineering.
Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, Great Wyrley Academy, John Taylor High School, and Lawrence Sheriff High School took the prizes at the Design & Make Challenge 2023, the largest one ever held by the Manufacturing Assembly Network (MAN). Read more at The Manufacturer

Birmingham manufacturer Knowles celebrates centenary with £400k investment
A Birmingham-based fire door manufacturer has invested in new machinery to help increase its efficiency and production capabilities, thanks to support from Lloyds Bank.
Knowles, part of Sentry Fire Safety Group, manufactures timber fire safety and security doorsets, working with construction clients and local authorities.
To support growing demand, Knowles decided to purchase three new pieces of manufacturing machinery, using a £400,000 investment secured from Lloyds Bank. Read more at The Manufacturer
