BAE Systems opens new £12m applied shipbuilding academy in Glasgow

A new £12m state-of-the-art training facility has opened in Glasgow to ensure Scottish shipbuilding has a thriving workforce for generations to come.

The Applied Shipbuilding Academy at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard measures 5,500 and is designed to develop the entire workforce, from new starters to senior leaders. More via The Manufacturer

University of Liverpool formalises partnership with Manufacturing Technology Centre

The University of Liverpool has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), a UK-based technology innovation centre, to further expand interactions across research disciplines and strategic innovation priorities. More via University of Liverpool

Kalsec announces opening of new UK manufacturing centre

Kalsec has announced the grand opening of its new finishing and distribution centre in Suffolk, UK.

The 8,000-square-foot centre will join Kalsec’s existing campus of facilities operating in Suffolk for the past 29 years, which include administrative, manufacturing, quality control, quality assurance and distribution functions. More via FoodBev Media

Aurrigo introduces autonomous vehicles to Inverness Airport and beyond

Passengers at Inverness Airport have the opportunity to ride in an Aurrigo autonomous Auto-Pod from the new rail station to the airport terminal.

The pilot, which will run until August 30th, will see two types of automated people movers trialled – the smaller Auto-Pod at Inverness Airport and the larger Auto-Shuttle at the University of the Highlands and Islands’ Inverness Campus. More via The Manufacturer

Turkey’s Eren secures $850m loan for new UK paper mill

Turkish industrial and retail group Eren Holding AS has secured a €775m ($854m) loan to finance a $1.3bn container-board and tissue plant in Wales, in a boost to foreign direct investment in UK manufacturing.

The money will help build a new plant in Shotton, which will have the capacity to produce 750,000 tons of container-board and 67,000 tons of tissue paper a year. More via BNN Bloomberg
