UK automotive industry vulnerability revealed – new Aston University research

Researchers have called for urgent policy intervention and a focused effort to ensure the UK’s automotive industry remains a critical pillar of the British economy.

Professor Jun Du and Dr Oleksandr Shepotylo found that the UK is in a weak position to capitalise on the EV revolution and immediate market opportunities and – such is the pace of change – the opportunity won’t wait for policy makers to catch up. More via The Manufacturer

South Korea’s SeAH Wind has started its large-scale drive to recruit for positions including welders, platers, roll bending machine operatives, mechanical and electrical technicians, supervisors, and general operatives for its XXL monopile manufacturing facility on Teesworks in the UK. Manufacturer snaps up £38m-turnover cladding contractor

Brickability has bought cladding and roofing contractor Topek Southern Ltd (TSL) in a deal worth up to £48m.

The building-materials specialist said the move would expand its cladding installation and remediation capabilities across the country, complementing its acquisition of Group Topek Holdings in October. More via Construction News

Gripple raises over £28k for local charity

Gripple, the Sheffield-based, employee-owned manufacturer of wire joiners and tensioners and suspension solutions for agriculture, construction, solar and infrastructure, is celebrating a bumper year for its charitable fundraising activities, raising over £28,000 for the Create a Dream Foundation. Chinese EV giant BYD aims for UK market breakthrough

BYD has outlined ambitious plans for 2024 and plans to move fast to deliver an electric vehicle (EV) in every segment of the UK market.

Speaking at the Auto Trader What’s New On The Road To 2035 webinar, BYD head of sales Simon Bisp acknowledged the challenge of being the ‘biggest car manufacturer you’ve never heard of’ and said the Chinese manufacturer’s goal in 2024 would be ‘to change that narrative’. More via AM Online

Rheinmetall BAE Systems wins Challenger 3 modular armour contract in UK

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) has won a contract to deliver a new modular armour system for the Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank for the British Army.

The contract was awarded to RBSL by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), a trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence. More via Shephard
