Car manufacturing dips as factories switch to electric models

UK car manufacturing output declined by -11.9% to 69,652 units in May, according to new figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Production for the UK market rose by 9.7% to 17,754 units but did not offset a -17.4% decline in volumes for export, at 51,898 units. Despite the fall, almost three quarters (74.5%) of all cars built in Britain were exported to global markets, with more than half (52.5%) going to the EU followed by the US (18.2%) and Turkey, which took 8.0% of shipments. Mackintosh to close Lancashire factory

Scottish outerwear brand Mackintosh is closing its manufacturing facility in Nelson, Lancashire, citing Brexit, which “made it untenable” to continue its operation. More via Drapers

Schneider Electric named the world’s most sustainable company

Schneider Electric has topped the “World’s Most Sustainable Companies for 2024” list by Time magazine and Statista. More via The Manufacturer

Chinese chipmaker invests $200m in Hamburg processor plant

Global semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia has announced a $200 million investment to expand its production capabilities at its Hamburg, Germany facility.

The Dutch-headquartered company, owned by Chinese electronics firm WingTech, plans to develop next-generation wide bandgap semiconductors and increase wafer fab capacity for silicon diodes and transistors. More via National Technology News

Eddisons sells 36,500 sq ft Bradford mill to bed manufacturer

Bradford-based Wow Lifestyle, which manufactures beds and mattresses for leisure and hospitality sector clients such as Haven Holidays, Parkdean Resorts, Butlins and Scape student accommodation is relocating its manufacturing base within the city. More via The Yorkshire Post

Yorkshire-manufactured linseed paint chosen for £20m Natural History Museum renovation

The team that is renovating the landmark Waterhouse Building, one of London’s most iconic 19th century buildings, will use historically accurate and sustainable linseed paint, made in North Yorkshire, to restore each of the structure’s hundreds of original cast iron windows as it undergoes the latest phase of a £20m restoration project.
