Tomorrow (Friday June 6) is the closing day for entries into the medal design competition for WorldSkills London 2011.
The WorldSkills competition, being held in its 60th year in London this October, expects to attract over 1000 competitors from around 50 countries all eager to win in the 45 available skills categories. The competition to design the coveted medals invites budding young designers to put their marque on this key skills event which will be the largest competitive meeting in the UK this side of the Olympics.
Among the 45 categories for vocational skills there are several which are manufacturing and engineering oriented including a demanding manufacturing team challenge which reflects the interdisciplinary nature of modern manufacturing with tasks which require knowledge of design, assembly, automation, electronics and more.
Also showing the strong position of manufacturing and engineering skills within the WorldSkills competition the prize for the winner of the medal design competition is a visit to the Bentley factory in Crewe where the medals will be produced, along with a VIP lunch with one of Bentley’s top designers.
Above and beyond supporting the WorldSkills competition as sponsors and providers of the above prize however, Bentley is also a keen competitor. Its entry for the manufacturing team challenge is up against another from BAE Systems in the bid to form part of the overall Team UK, a selection which is due to be made in June. During preparation for this selection each team is being coached and mentored by a dedicated training manager.
WoldSkills is a competition with a proud history of veneration for vocational skills and its arrival in the UK, just as government puts its weight behind the Plan for Growth and incentives for economic rebalance, is more than opportune.
