European industry has begun a public-private initiative to begin producing more environmentally friendly aircraft.
Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Dassault and Saab are all taking part in the £1.2 billion (1.6 billion euro) scheme, which is to be funded by the European Union and by industry.
EU Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik explained that the programme will not only be of huge benefit to the environment, but will also help to keep Europe at the forefront of the aerospace industry sector.
