First casualty of Ford Transit closure

Posted on 15 Nov 2012

Magna Seating, which has a dedicated factory for making seats for Ford Transit vans in Southampton, will be closing down as a result of the automotive company’s decision to shut the plant.

An operating unit of Magna International, Magna Seating is closing its facility in Southampton with 30 jobs set to go.

The company said that there is “no longer a viable business case” for the just-in-time manufacture and delivery of complete seating systems for the Ford Transit.

Ford, which is switching body and assembly work to Turkey, a move culminating in the loss of 500 jobs, is the site’s sole customer.

A company statement said that the “timing of the Magna Seating closure will be determined based on completion of the customer’s requirements.”
