Gold for Brompton in Germany

Brompton Bicycle, manufacturer of the Brompton folding bike, has been awarded its first Eurobike Award for the Brompton Oratory Jacket, launched in London last month.

The London-based company’s new Oratory Jacket was one of just 10 products to win a Gold Award at the first day of the Eurobike show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, an award given to products that demonstrate “outstanding achievement in design and innovation”.

“The Oratory is a cycling jacket that doesn’t look like a cycling jacket, and which normalises cycling, without any loss of functionality on the bike,” said Brompton’s head of design, Will Carleysmith. “It took us three years of designs, prototypes and testing before we got a product we felt did our reputation as a high-quality manufacturer proud. It’s been a long road but everyone involved in the project should feel very proud today.”

Managing director of Brompton William Butler-Adams [pictured, wearing the jacket] said. “Making world-class bikes in London will always be at the heart of Brompton – it is our core business, and we do it very well. But our knowledge of the cycling and transportation sectors means that we can also play a positive role in related areas; one example of that is the innovative Brompton Dock hire solution being rolled out at UK train stations, and the Brompton Oratory jacket is another example.”

“Our goal is to become the personal transport brand of choice by making outstanding products, whether that is in and around our bikes – and we are announcing a few innovations there this week too – or in ancillary services, apparel, and so on,” he added.

The Eurobike Award is an industry award for bicycles and bicycle accessories, administered by iF International Forum Design GmbH. The award is based on criteria such as degree of innovation, use of materials, functionality and sustainability.
