The Sheffield-based manufacturer that created the wire joiner and tensioner has won the 2011 Green Apple Environment Award – making it one of the UK’s greenest companies.

As well as being entered in the Green Book, a guide to best practice in environmental issues, Gripple is being considered to represent the UK in the European Business Awards for the Environment.

In 2010 the company won a Queens Award for commitment to sustainable development, and participated in the 10:10 campaign which focuses on reducing its carbon emissions by 10%.

Gripple’s managing director Mark Edmonds said: “This award is a notable achievement by our company as it reflects the huge effort our staff make in minimising our environment impact. Gripple is proud to be numbered among those who share our commitment and have been so prestigiously recognised for making worthwhile contributions to sustainable development.”

Created in 1994, the Green Apple Environment Awards scheme is now established as the country’s major recognition of environmental efforts by companies, councils, communities and countries.

The scheme is organised by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising and promoting environmental best practice.
