HSSMI and UCL announce manufacturing collaboration

The High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute has teamed up with the University College London to address some of the challenges facing UK manufacturing.

The university is the latest academic partner to collaborate with the research centre, which operates out of The Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) site in Rainham, Essex.

The partnership aims to tackle issues such as energy consumption, sustainable production methods, and the generation of high-value jobs and opportunities.

It is hoped UK manufacturing companies will benefit from any new techniques and services developed by the alliance, which will also seek to enable sustainable manufacturing in an increasingly urbanised society.

HSSMI says the existing strengths of UCL Engineering in bioprocessing manufacture and its portfolio of research supporting 21st century technologies such as the manufacturing of fuel cells makes it a suitable collaborative partner.

Professor Anthony Finkelstein, dean of UCL Engineering, said he aims to raise awareness of London as a centre of high-value manufacturing and engineering excellence.

”London is a global city and, though people do not know this, a centre of high-value manufacturing and engineering excellence,” he said.

“We are committed to working with HSSMI to build a research and knowledge exchange to focus on sustainable manufacturing in London.”

Dr Leslie Lee, research director at HSSMI, added: “We see significant added value through the new partnership with UCL.

“We gain access to their global leading research, and in turn we can develop manufacturing processes and identify costs, deliver quality and high speed production.”
