The cooperation between Huawei and KUKA will reportedly centre on driving the acceptance and adoption of smart manufacturing production processes – i.e. those which leverage enhanced interconnected systems, big data and analytics and intelligent automation.

The pair have a pre-existing working relationship, having already partnered together in the new technology innovation space, alongside joint event marketing.

The new agreement is expected to see the pair release 5G-enabled, wireless collaborative robots (cobots), which made their debut earlier this year. The connectivity 5G offers, aside from the obvious lack of physical cabling, includes enhanced flexibility through wireless machine-to-machine and machine-to-cloud communication.

Effectively synching machines together within an ecosystem in real-time has been proven to generate significant productivity and quality improvements, alongside increased manufacturing agility and flexibility.

According to Huawei’s executive director and president of products & solutions, Ryan Ding: “The manufacturing industry is undergoing a profound transformation, and robots will be critical to revolutionising factories and driving new opportunities.”

KUKA CFO, Peter Mohen considers digitisation and Industry 4.0 to bring “fundamental changes to industrial production”, an evolution which will necessitate the development of new products, solutions and concepts.
