Belgian beer producer InBev has announced it is to close one of the UK’s oldest breweries. The site in Mortlake, London dates back to the 15th century and hosts 182 employees. It will cease to operate from 2010.
Stella Artois producer InBev acquired American firm Anheuser-Busch, maker of Budweiser, in the latter stages of last year with the deal valued at $52 billion. Together, the two firms became the world’s biggest brewer, overtaking SABMiller.
As part of its restructure plans here in the UK, InBev today announced its proposals to close the historic Stagg Brewery in West London. The company said the move was part of “synergies arising from the merger” and that it is “a response to challenging market conditions and significantly higher costs imposed as a result of record rises in beer taxation, which mean that we need to review and propose any changes now.”
The firm said the decision “not a reflection on the quality of our employees, who will be an integral part of this process and will be treated with respect throughout.”
It is not yet known if the staff will be relocated to other InBev or Anheuser-Busch sites.
InBev also makes Becks, Brahma, Bass and Leffe amongst other world-famous brands.
