Intertronics unveils new NASA-approved adhesive for aerospace and defence electronics

Adhesives specialist Intertronics has launched a new light-curing adhesive designed to improve the reliability and manufacturability of electronic assemblies for aerospace and defence applications.

Dymax 9773 has been developed for ruggedising and staking critical electronic components onto printed circuit boards, combining low outgassing, dielectric stability and rapid UV curing to meet the demanding performance and production requirements of high-reliability sectors.

The single-part adhesive is suitable for electronics assembly and optical applications where products are deployed in environments that cannot be serviced or repaired. Even small changes in material performance can lead to long-term degradation, making material selection critical.

Dymax 9773 meets stringent outgassing requirements, passing ASTM E595 with low Total Mass Loss and being listed on NASA’s MAPTIS database. Low outgassing performance is essential in aerospace environments, where vapours released under heat and vacuum can contaminate optics, affect thermal control surfaces or interfere with sensitive electronics.

The adhesive also satisfies MIL-STD-883 Method 5011, demonstrating that it remains electrically insulating and dielectrically stable after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This performance is particularly important in preventing ionic migration, a key reliability risk for electronics operating in remote or harsh conditions.

Designed with modern manufacturing demands in mind, Dymax 9773 cures in seconds using UV or visible light and does not slump during application. Its single-part formulation makes it compatible with automated dispensing and jetting systems, offering a faster alternative to traditional multi-part epoxies or silicones while maintaining qualification standards.

Matt Baseley, head of sales at Intertronics, said the adhesive was created to address multiple challenges faced by aerospace and defence manufacturers. “This adhesive was designed to fulfil a range of purposes in mission-critical aerospace, defence and optics applications, including shock and vibration absorption, encapsulation, ruggedisation and reinforcement of electronic components, and underfill,” he said.

“This unison of three key properties addresses a need in the market with a dedicated product for design engineers in these highly controlled sectors.”

Dymax 9773 contains no solvents or halogens and is Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant, helping manufacturers meet Defence Environmental Protection, Environmental Protection Agency and other applicable environmental regulations.
