3Ks Engineering has won a £1 million contract to make panels that will open and close the new Wimbledon centre court retractable roof.

The Carmarthenshire company was chosen as it is the only UK firm capable of fabricating, machining and assembling the panels on a single site.

“We do a lot of offshore work anyway for the Ministry of Defence so we have the systems in place to compete with the big companies,” said a company spokesman. “We got the work because we can fabricate and handle the large components.”

The panels are due to be finished and transported to their new home in November so that the roof can be made ready for the 2009 Wimbledon event.
