Family-owned hardwood veneer manufacturer Manthei Wood Products has acquired Cahaba Veneer in Centreville, Alabama, securing existing jobs and paving the way for further investment in the state’s forestry and manufacturing sector.
The acquisition, announced by the Bibb County Economic & Industrial Development Authority, will see Manthei invest up to $10m into the facility while retaining 67 jobs and creating an additional 37 positions.
Founded in 1995, Cahaba Veneer has established itself as a specialist producer of hardwood veneer serving markets including engineered flooring, custom plywood and niche applications such as skateboard veneer. The facility itself has a manufacturing history dating back to around 1900 and has previously produced products ranging from hardwood flooring to broom handles.
Michigan-based Manthei Wood Products traces its roots back to the 1940s and is now led by the third generation of the Manthei family. The company said the Centreville site would play an important role in expanding its plywood and veneer capabilities through vertical integration and new product offerings.
Stephanie Kemmer, chairman of the Bibb County Economic & Industrial Development Authority, described the deal as a major boost for the region.
“This is a tremendous win for Bibb County,” she said. “Cahaba Veneer has been a cornerstone of our industrial community, and Manthei’s investment ensures that legacy will continue to grow for years to come.”

Abe Manthei of the Manthei Group said the company had received a warm welcome from the local community and viewed the Alabama operation as a strategic addition to its manufacturing footprint.
“This new plant will be a key piece in our wood manufacturing business, allowing us to expand our plywood and veneer operations through both vertical integration and new product offerings.”

State officials also highlighted the significance of the investment for Alabama’s forestry and manufacturing economy. Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, said the move reinforced the state’s position as a leader in forest products manufacturing.
“Alabama’s forest products industry is one of the strongest in the nation, and this investment further solidifies that position,” McNair said.
Regional business and workforce organisations welcomed the announcement, with Steve Ammons, president and CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance, saying the expansion would support long-term economic growth across the Greater Birmingham region.
Meanwhile, West Alabama Works said the project would create new opportunities for workforce development and career progression in the area.
Manthei Wood Products plans to continue operating the Centreville facility while investing in upgraded equipment, efficiency improvements and expanded production capabilities aimed at supporting both traditional and specialty veneer markets.
