Mars Inc is set to announce a $22 billion (£11.1 billion) acquisition of Wrigley, which will create the world’s largest confectionery firm.

The deal is thought to have been approved by the boards of both companies and will see chewing gum maker Wrigley become a subsidiary of Mars Inc.

Once merged, the companies would have a global market share of about 14.4 per cent, compared to the 10 per cent owned by rival confectionery firm Cadbury.
