Micron Technology will today break ground on what it describes as the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility ever built in the United States, marking a major milestone for domestic chip production and New York state’s economy.
The memory manufacturer is set to begin construction on its planned megafab in Onondaga County, Central New York, following the completion of environmental reviews and the receipt of key permits. The $100bn project represents the largest private investment in New York state history.
Once completed, the campus will house up to four semiconductor fabrication plants and will support what Micron says will be the most advanced memory manufacturing capabilities in the world. The facility is intended to help meet growing global demand for memory chips driven by artificial intelligence, data centres and next-generation computing systems.
Micron chairman, president and chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra will be joined by senior company executives and a range of federal, state and local officials for the groundbreaking. Representatives from the Trump administration, Congress, New York state government and local authorities are expected to attend, alongside business leaders and members of the local community.
Following the site ceremony, a celebration event will be held at Syracuse University’s National Veterans Resource Center, where executives and public officials will deliver remarks on the project’s significance.
Mehrotra said the groundbreaking would mark a defining moment for both Micron and the United States semiconductor industry.
“Breaking ground at Micron’s New York megafab is a pivotal moment for Micron and the United States,” he said. “As the global economy enters the AI era, leadership in advanced semiconductors will be the cornerstone in innovation and economic prosperity.”
He added that the investment would reinforce Micron’s position as the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory at scale and credited support from federal and state leaders for helping the project reach this milestone.
The New York megafab forms part of broader efforts to strengthen U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity, reduce reliance on overseas production and secure supply chains for critical technologies. Construction activity at the site is expected to ramp up following today’s groundbreaking.
