The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has become the newest member of The Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group (MICG).
MTC is an independent research and technology organisation which brings together partners across business, academia and the public sector to transform how products are designed, made and built so that they can be produced on a commercial scale – more sustainably, effectively and safely.
Based in Coventry and part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, MTC has delivered pioneering solutions to help overhaul industries spanning Aerospace, Defence & Security, Power & Energy, Built Environments, Space, Agriculture and Food & Drink.
Its alliance with MICG represents a significant step forward in positioning the Midlands as a global leader in advanced ceramics.
Dr Gilda Gasparini, of Midlands Industrial Ceramics Group, said: “MTC is committed to driving progress in manufacturing technology through collaboration, transformation and innovation.
“This closely aligns with MICG’s work to position the Midlands as the go-to location for industrial and academic expertise in the development and commercialisation of new and enhanced processes and products in advanced ceramics.”
Established in 2010 with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry, MTC integrates advanced technology and cross-sector expertise as part of its impartial and collaborative approach to delivering real world solutions.
Joe Darlington, Director of Engineering at MTC, said: Innovation in materials science enables products to meet increasingly tougher demands, especially from industries that are working to address some of the biggest problems we are facing today.
“By partnering with MICG, we can help commercialise the region’s expertise in academic materials science and chemistry.
“In doing so, we can accelerate the Midland’s capability in supplying new materials to burgeoning industries, deliver much-needed solutions, and help secure a strategic advantage for the UK.”
MICG is made up of blue-chip companies including Rolls-Royce, Morgan Advanced Materials and Foseco, as well as SMEs including Lucideon, Precision Ceramics and PCL – together with the universities of Birmingham, Leicester and Loughborough.
MICG secured £18.27m government funding, provided through UK Research and Innovation’s flagship Strength in Places Fund (SIPF), in October 2022.
