Nasmyth Group first established a foothold in India in 2009 with a mission to develop and align skills in both the UK and India. The decision led to it setting up a supply chain liaison office in Bangalore.

Following four years of production proving, the first part manufactured to full production standards was received in 2013. The liaison office opened in the same year in order to manage the planning, engineering, cost and quality of components produced by partner companies across India.

These products are delivered to Nasmyth in the UK and are then further processed prior to delivery to aerospace Prime and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide.

Since opening its liaison office, the Nasmyth team has developed and mentored a range of partner suppliers in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Coimbatore, with a combined manufacturing workforce across southern India of more than 1,000.

The scale of demand for high quality products and the ability of these Indian suppliers to meet the requirements of Nasmyth customers has resulted in a near  year-on-year doubling of output. Having shipped 500,000 components during 2016, Nasmyth Group recently reached the milestone of 1 million parts shipped from India to the UK.

CEO of Nasmyth Group, Peter Smith explained: “Nasmyth Group and our partners have achieved many things together, including significantly increasing production and controlling costs. Accepting delivery of the one millionth component from India is a major milestone for the combined team as we, and our customers, see the benefit of Nasmyth’s decision to look to India to complement our UK engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The success is a testament to our partners’ dedicated and hardworking teams in India.”

Between 2010 and 2015 the UK aerospace industry saw production growth of 30% compared to 2% for the UK economy and sustained growth is expected to continue. Meeting this global challenge is reportedly a priority for Nasmyth Group, and the number of components manufactured in India – around 5% of the group’s total global sales – is expected to grow exponentially.

The Nasmyth liaison team will soon be expanding in to a new purpose built office in Bangalore. It will do so alongside the group’s newly inaugurated company, Nasmyth India Private Limited. The new company will provide design engineering resources across the Nasmyth Group and was inaugurated at an official ceremony in Bangalore on 13 February.

The co-location of the two Nasmyth ventures in India is expected to result in further growth, including an office to be established in Chennai and in the sustained development of the strong relationship between Nasmyth’s UK operations and its Indian partners.
