A new factory manufacturing high-end bicycle components is set to open in the UK next month.
Entrepreneurs Cy Turner and Mike McDermid have set up their new South Yorkshire-based company, Bicycle Manufacturing, which they say will become an efficient, cost effective local source of components to UK buyers.
They also believe by adopting the latest automated techniques and equipment, the company can rival the mass production facilities in Far Eastern countries such as Taiwan and China, which currently dominate the global bike manufacturing industry.
Turner, who founded the Cotic mountain bike brand a decade ago, told Bike Radar: “I’m so excited to be able to repatriate some manufacturing to the UK, and to Yorkshire in particular.
“We do have the skills, the desire, but it takes effort and investment and some self confidence to pull it together.”
It is believed local production gives the UK company the advantage because of quicker prototyping and delivery times, having invested in a modern CNC machine and welding equipment.
The company will concentrate its focus on mid to high-end metal bikes and components in steel, aluminium and titanium.
