It has been a long time coming but sports car manufacturer McLaren will this week launch its MP4-12C model, its first bespoke road car since the F1 in 1998.

The two-seater MP4-12C doesn’t go on sale until early 2011 and will carry a predicted price tag of up to£170,000.

It features a 3.8-litre V8 capable of producing around 600bhp and according to Car Magazine, it delivers the highest horsepower to CO2 ratio of any car on the market today with an internal combustion engines.

“It is a long-held dream of mine to launch high performance sports cars that set new standards in the industry,” says McLaren Automotive Chairman, Ron Dennis.

“We began designing and building cars for aficionados of thoroughbred sports cars almost 20 years ago. Incorporating the leading edge technologies that the McLaren Group has built up, I believe we are now perfectly placed to open up this new chapter in McLaren’s history,” he said.

The new model will be manufactured on a new purpose built site in Woking which is currently under construction. McLaren predicts it will produce 1000 vehicles in its first year of production, which is likely to commence in 2011.
