New UK space strategy targets growth in manufacturing and supply chains

The government has unveiled a new UK Space Strategy backed by £7.8bn of investment through to 2030, with plans to use the space sector to support UK reindustrialisation and create new opportunities for manufacturers.

The strategy brings government investment and activity under a single plan, with a focus on strengthening the UK’s industrial base, supporting skilled jobs and helping British companies win more work.

The UK space sector is currently worth £18.6bn and supports more than 55,000 skilled jobs, according to the government.

Supporting new manufacturing capabilities

One of the key measures is £40m for in-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing technologies. The funding will support technologies capable of repairing and maintaining satellites in space, as well as removing debris from orbit.

The government also expects these technologies to support the development of new products manufactured in the unique environment of space, including semiconductors and pharmaceutical applications.

A further £148m for European rocket programmes and £30m for SaxaVord Spaceport will support satellite launch capability and create opportunities for UK companies.

The strategy also includes £163m for space science and exploration missions, including the UK-built Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover, with investment supporting technologies such as AI and autonomous systems.

Strengthening UK supply chains

For manufacturers, one of the most significant changes will be the government’s plan to take a more coordinated approach to buying and developing space technology.

Starting with satellite communications, the approach is intended to help British companies secure more contracts, strengthen UK supply chains and support skilled jobs.

The strategy will also play a role in delivering the government’s Modern Industrial Strategy, with ministers positioning space as a key part of efforts to reindustrialise the UK.

The government is also reforming space regulations, with the aim of reducing costs and making it easier for UK firms to invest in technologies ranging from satellite servicing to lunar exploration.
