News International has opened a brand new state-of-the-art printing facility – covering an area the size of 23 football pitches.
The site in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, contains 12 colour printing presses capable of printing 70,000 papers per hour, compared to the 30,000 that had been produced at the old site in Wapping, east London, which will now close. The presses are also much quieter than their predecessors, and require just 200 operators, as opposed to the 600 at Wapping.
The new site will provide a welcome boost to the newspaper industry in the increasingly digital-dependent media world.
