More than 30 years after being discontinued Nissan has reintroduced the Datsun.
The rebooted model was unveiled in India yesterday with the brand aimed at “Young Risers”.
The new model is being targeted at first-time buyers looking to own a first car with the promotional website labelling the car as the “badge of the risers”.
With a more compact look than its predecessor the reborn 1.2-litre five-seat hatchback will go on sale in India next year for under 400,000 rupees ($6,670; £4,500). It will also be sold in Indonesia and Russia.
The latest model is called the Datsun Go, in homage to the DAT-GO launched almost a century ago in Japan.
Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, hailed the start of a “new chapter” in the Datsun story and highlighted the aim to give the car a sit in growth markets such as India.
“Datsun was one of the industry’s iconic brands. We are committed to building, manufacturing capacities and establishing a meaningful presence in high growth markets like India.”
Mr Ghosn added: “We will offer a modern take on Datsun’s core values in India and pay tribute to the brand’s heritage. The power of local engineering and manufacturing has been used to make this a reality.”
