The Sunderland Nissan plant has been selected to manufacture a new model in the firm’s range of cars, to begin in 2010 when production of the current Micra ends.

The news has been welcomed by the factory as it secures the jobs of its 4,700 workers.

“By delivering on tough commitments, our employees at Sunderland have demonstrated our plant can be a globally competitive centre for the production of high-value products,” said Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn.
