Packaging giant wields the axe

Mondi – the multinational manufacturer of cardboard boxes – is making a sixth of the workforce at its Norfolk factory redundant, after closing its Scunthorpe site in May.

The latest cut – 28 jobs – comes at the Mondi Packaging UK site in Pulham St. Mary near Diss.

“The 28 positions are across the senior management, administration, and production operatives at the factory. Basically it is because of a downturn in demand, simple as that. It is unfortunately down to the economy,” said managing director, Steve Moss.

The company also has manufacturing sites in Cambridgeshire and South Wales. The UK arm is part of the wider Mondi parent company which employs 33,000 at sites around the world.

Earlier this month Mondi reported pre-tax losses of €1m in the first six months of 2009. It would have registered an €81m pre-tax profit but spent €82m on restructuring.
