Palm Paper to build world’s biggest mill

Palm Paper, Germany’s largest paper company, has begun building a £400 million paper mill in King’s Lynn, Norfolk – the first international investment made by the company.

Construction of the mill, which is to be the world’s biggest, will open up 1,000 jobs in the building sector. Once it is completed, it will employ 150 people directly, and many more in the support services sector.

The plant will turn waste paper into newsprint – a process which would previously have been conducted abroad.

“The reason for building a newsprint mill in the UK is the lack of domestic supply. About 1.2 million tonnes have to be imported every year,” explained head of Palm Paper Dr Wolfgang Palm. “We have been shipping newsprint into the UK from our German mills for 13 years and our customers have increasingly asked us to introduce production in this country.”

The mill is to begin operations in September 2009.
