In early November, journalists attended a press day at Matta’s Head Office in Old Street, London to learn more about the company’s work in industrial AI.
Matta was founded in 2022 as a spinout from the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing and has developed an AI-driven inspection and factory data platform designed for direct installation onto existing production lines.
During the press morning, the Matta team outlined how its system functions. Cameras are positioned on manufacturing lines and connected to Matta’s software platform, where a learning-based model analyses products over several hours or days.
“The AI can operate autonomously or with human feedback, identifying defects, anomalies and measurement issues in real time. The system also captures barcode and serial number data for part traceability and cycle-time monitoring,” said Doug Brion, Founder and CEO at Matta.
Inside the factories
Most installations are completed within a few hours, with the AI typically requiring one to two weeks of observation before beginning automatic inspections of production. The system is designed to handle variable lighting, movement, and product changes, distinguishing it from traditional rule-based vision setups that rely on fixed thresholds.
Matta already has current deployments in factories producing waterproof garments, speaker cabinets, platinum wafers and robot arms. “We are currently adding around two new installations per month and currently have more than 300 manufacturers in our pipeline, ranging from SMEs to larger industrial companies,” added Doug.
Future thinking
The company also outlined its ongoing work on “correction”, an AI capability aimed at predicting the root causes of defects and recommending or enabling adjustments to machinery. Matta is exploring partnerships with machine OEMs to integrate this functionality into next-generation production equipment.
