QinetiQ has been awarded a three-year contract by the MOD’s Defence Equipment & Support operation to continue support for the Typhoon programme.

Worth £37m, and covering release to service recommendations; crew protection and performance; mission system software support; technical and business support; as well as airworthiness and safety clearance, it follows on from the original £52.5m contract signed with the Typhoon Project Team in 2006.

QinetiQ will deliver the project from sites across the UK, including MOD Boscombe Down, BAE Systems Warton, Farnborough, Malvern and Bristol. A number of the MOD ranges, which are operated by QinetiQ under the long term partnering agreement (LTPA), will also be used in support of the programme.

QinetiQ played a central role in the evolution of the Eurofighter Typhoon since its conception over 20 years ago, with tasks such as providing independent Release to Service (RTS) safety recommendations; the technical review of Verification, Qualification and Certification (VQ&C) evidence; programme risk reduction and recovery support activities; future capability/decision support; and the operation of strategic facilities for the MOD.

“This contract recognises the strategic role QinetiQ continues to have in the development and future operation of this aircraft, along with the operational savings we can help the MOD achieve,” explained Mike Howarth, MD for QinetiQ’s Managed Services business.

“We are focused on cost effectively developing and delivering quality support that enables the Typhoon to operate safely and to enable new sophisticated modern systems to be integrated onto the aircraft.”
