Resource efficiency simulation tool set to be a game changer

An innovative research project aims to provide manufacturers with accurate assessments of how individual sites will benefit from implementing resource efficient actions, and the cost savings this will generate.

For the first time, manufacturers will be able to accurately estimate the difference resource efficient measures will have prior to adopting them.

The ground-breaking resource efficiency research hopes to end the uncertainty that surrounds high-cost, bespoke simulations, by giving manufacturers access to the results offered by technology designed to cut energy, waste and water, before they implement such solutions.

Currently, few decision-makers are able to accurately predict how efficiency saving measures will affect their sites before they are installed. However, this tool will enable them to identify the scenarios which will drive the best results and greatest savings.

The Innovate UK-funded project will see Manufacture 2030 and HSSMI work collaboratively to determine what changes a manufacturer is looking to make, and utilise the data from the innovative M2030 bee, combined with HSSMI’s modelling to simulate the effect of these improvement measures.

Combined with live benchmarking data for each site or the entire portfolio, manufacturers will be able to accurately estimate the difference resource efficient measures will have.

Resource efficiency is about minimising waste and the efficient use of inputs and outputs in the manufacturing process (energy, water, raw materials, physical wastes).

The Manufacturer has teamed up with Manufacturer 2030 to better understand the resource efficiency challenges and concerns facing manufacturers, as well as the appetite for implementing improvements.

The survey examines the ‘value proposition’ at the heart of resource efficiency management– profitability can be improved by reducing the amount of resources used. The survey also examines the barriers to achieving resource efficiency; what systems are available to make change and asks if you have the right systems in place to maximise resource efficiency?

Martin Chilcott, founder & chairman of 2degrees – which launched Manufacture 2030 in 2017 explained: “Research has shown that manufacturers stand to gain up to 7% resource efficiency improvements through structured operational action planning year-on-year.

“However, implementing the right processes to achieve this is a challenge the industry faces, as there are many unknowns to factor in. As a result, decisions are often delayed due to uncertainty over the end result.

He added: “Finally, manufacturers will have the certainty they crave, enabling them to become more resource efficient, benefitting the environment and bottom line too.”

Aanand Davé, virtual engineering manager at HSSMI, commented: “By applying simulation to an ever-expanding and improving set of actions, and by sharing relevant insight across an audience of thousands of professionals and sectors, we can scale the adoption of verified improvements much more quickly.”

The initial research project will last until the end of the year and will test the feasibility of introducing simulation into Manufacture 2030’s innovative M2030 bee software tool.
