A year-long initiative supported by Sellafield is helping young people in Warrington build confidence, develop life skills and make positive choices through sport, mentoring and community engagement.
Delivered in partnership with Warrington Youth Zone, the Train Like a Pro programme has supported young people identified by Cheshire Police, the Warrington Youth Justice Service and local secondary schools as being at risk of anti-social behaviour. Instead of focusing on challenges, the initiative has channelled their energy into structured activities, teamwork and personal development.
Over 12 weeks, 44 participants took part in football, boxing, rugby, gym and climbing sessions, alongside workshops on mental health, community safety and making positive life choices. For many, the programme offered routine, encouragement and a sense of belonging.
“Before this, I was always in trouble. Now I’ve got something to look forward to every week – people who listen and believe in me,” said one 14-year-old participant.
Sellafield Ltd has supported Warrington Youth Zone since becoming a Founder Patron in 2020, contributing funding, mentoring and employability support. A £100,000 investment helped establish the Youth Zone’s state-of-the-art facility, which opened in July 2022.
The collaboration reflects Sellafield’s wider social impact work, helping young people access opportunities that build resilience, confidence and practical skills.
Following the initial programme, 16 participants progressed to a 16-week sports leadership qualification. They gained coaching experience through the Youth Zone’s holiday club, delivering more than 112 hours of community sports activities.
The results have been striking:
-
67% reported increased self-esteem
-
78% improved leadership skills
-
72% saw improvements in physical health
Local officers have also noticed the difference.
“This project gives young people a sense of purpose. It’s making a massive impact on their confidence, their choices and the community as a whole,” said PC Chris Davies of Warrington Police.
One young person, once known locally for anti-social behaviour, is now a qualified sports leader volunteering at the Youth Zone as a junior coach.
“Instead of hanging around, I’m helping kids get into football. It feels good to be doing something positive.”
By combining sport, mentoring and opportunity, the Train Like a Pro programme is helping young people discover new paths and build stronger connections to their community. Supported by Sellafield Ltd and Warrington Youth Zone, the initiative is showing how targeted investment and partnership working can turn potential trouble into lasting purpose – and help create a safer, more hopeful Warrington for everyone.
