Siemens has announced the acquisition of a majority stake (85%) in Materials Solutions – a leading additive manufacturing processing and production firm based in Worcester.
According to the global engineering marque, the acquisition strengthens Siemens strategy for digitalisation in manufacturing, and additive manufacturing in particular.
Materials Solutions is reportedly a pioneer in the use of selective laser melting (SLM) technology for the manufacture of high-performance metal parts, with applications particularly suited to gas turbines where accuracy, surface finish and quality is vital.
In August 2015, Siemens Venture Capital acquired a minority stake (15%) in the company, with the current remaining 15% expected to be held by Materials Solutions founder, Carl Brancher.
CEO of Siemens power and gas division, Willi Mexiner explained: “With the acquisition of Materials Solutions, we are able to secure world-leading expertise in materials and additive manufacturing process development with focus on high-temperature super alloys.
“The company’s strength is to turn models into high quality components in record time. Clearly Material Solutions fits perfectly within our vision for growth and application of advanced technologies.”
Additive manufacturing specialist
Founded in 2006 and currently employing 20 highly skilled engineers, Materials Solutions has proven applications in high demanding fields such as aerospace, power generation and motor sports.
CEO, Carl Brancher said of the acquisition: “I am sure our know-how and experience will make a significant contribution to Siemens’ Additive Manufacturing strategy.
“Materials Solutions is developing the applications know-how and a supply chain for the world’s most advanced engineering companies – delivering processes and precision parts from 3D CAD models, using software, lasers and metal powders.
Materials Solutions is expected to continue to focus on supporting external customers in those highly demanding environments in order to continuously drive and leverage innovations across different industries.
Since the rise of additive manufacturing, Siemens has been investing in the technology and extensively uses additive manufacturing, technology for rapid prototyping and has introduced serial production solutions for rapid manufacturing of small fuel mixers and for rapid repair of burner tips for mid-size gas turbines.
