In line with the NSG's sustainability agenda, Pilkington has installed a suite of smart lighting solutions from Signify.

With the Interact IoT platform running in the cloud, companies can remotely manage and monitor individual light points, groups of light points, or your entire system. Check operational status, switch and dim, schedule, and troubleshoot from anywhere with an internet connection.

The advancement of connected lighting solutions has changed how we think about the light inside buildings. This goes beyond illumination into hygiene, health, well-being, and data networking, as well as using connected lighting systems as infrastructure for other Internet of things (IoT) sensors

Signify offers its clients the opportunity to future-proof their office & industrial sites, make significant energy & cost savings, improving overall operational efficiency & Sustainability, through the implementation of a state of Connected IoT lighting system “Interact industry”.

The solutions for NSG included cutting-edge connected lighting systems via Signify’s Lighting as a Service (LaaS) model, innovative 3D-printed luminaires, TruLifi, and Interact system for greater control, data capture, and a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

Signify has upgraded the lighting at NSG Group’s UK Sites in both Lathom, Lancashire, and Redditch, Worcestershire, with ongoing works across several sites in the UK.

Lighting as IoT infrastructure

Light accounted for a large proportion of commercial energy bills in the past, with some estimates showing it at almost half of retail energy consumption. So, the regulations for light levels in buildings were set at a minimum – well below the light levels available outdoors – with an eye on energy use and with little consideration for the needs of people beyond being able to see their work.

Once the lighting is connected and controlled by an IoT platform, the economics of other IoT applications start to improve. It’s attractive and relatively easy to use the lighting system as an infrastructure for additional sensors to get data about things like occupancy, people’s movement and social distancing, levels of humidity, noise, and light, as well as for connecting Bluetooth beacons.

With suitable luminaires in use, it costs less and is far easier to install these sensors to run over the lighting network than to install a separate system with its cabling. Click here to learn more about the Signify IoT Green Switch capabilities built on top of the Connected Lighting Solutions.

Pilkington Automotive, part of NSG Group, is one of the world’s largest automotive glass suppliers. Its European Technical Centre in Lathom, Lancashire, is currently being upgraded with this Interact Connected IoT lighting system. Understand how the new cloud-based, wireless, connected lighting system is providing Pilkington with energy savings and insights into space usage, helping to establish a safer working environment and future-proofing the installation for years to come, whilst also helping to contribute to NSGs sustainability targets. Specifically designed for warehouses and industrial settings, the system will do more than just provide light, it will give data driven insights about the site and allow Pilkington to make smarter decisions about its operations.
