Somerset manufacturer drives production back to UK

A Somerset manufacturer of high precision components for the motorsport, aerospace and defence industries has increased turnover by 10% and created five new jobs, after developing a new wheel product on site.

Talon Engineering is now able to supply customers who previously sourced components from overseas after deciding to product the new wheel at its UK factory rather than outsource to China.

Following support from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), company managing director Rob Sartin said the organisation was the best fit for a company looking to improve operations and business structure.

“MAS carried out a strategic review of our business, which showed us that we needed to develop a smarter way of working and so we installed four new CNC machines that have enabled us to run ‘lights out machining’”, he said.

“This has meant we have been able to develop a new wheel for our customers in-house rather than outsourcing it to China, which has resulted in cost savings, shorter lead times and increased quality control.

“With improved quality procedures now in place we have also been able to successfully target the aerospace and defence sectors with a range of high tolerance components.”

Richard Taylor, MAS Advisor for Somerset, added: “It has been fantastic to see Talon enthusiastically engage with long term support from MAS. A Strategic Management programme provided them with clarity and confidence to improve business controls and enhance future growth.

“The company successfully recruited key staff and identified capital investment to expand into the aerospace and defence sectors. I’m confident the business will continue to go from strength to strength.”
