A Spanish pharmaceutical firm has opened up a new headquarters in London in order to continue its assault on the UK market.

Almirall, with its main headquarters in Barcelona and further sites across Europe and Latin America, opened its new offices at Stockley Park, near Heathrow Airport, last week. It will be home to 50 staff.

The company now plans to expand the product portfolio it offers in the UK which currently consists primarily of dermatological medicine.

“This is a tremendously exciting moment for Almirall as we continue to strengthen our direct presence in Europe,” said Carlos Gallardo, Almirall general manager for UK and Ireland. “Our new offices enable us to be well positioned for the growing market in the UK and Ireland, where I am confident we will be able to make an increasing contribution to the improved treatment of patients in the UK.”

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson was present at the official opening of the site. He said: “Almirall’s decision to expand here is a clear recognition of the UK’s strengths as a modern, knowledge-based economy, where we have the skills and regulatory environment to compete effectively in high-tech, high value sectors such as pharmaceuticals.”

Almirall has market presence in 70 countries worldwide. In 2007 the company turned over €793m.
