Stellantis NV is preparing to invest around $10bn in its US operations, as the carmaker behind Jeep and Ram looks to reinforce its presence in the market most critical to its profits, Bloomberg reports.
According to people familiar with the plans, the company could announce as much as $5bn in new spending within weeks, adding to a similar commitment made earlier this year. The multiyear investments are expected to support plant reopenings, workforce expansion, and new model development in states including Illinois and Michigan.
The push marks a strategic shift under Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa, who took charge in May. Filosa is reassessing Stellantis’s global investment priorities after years of cost-cutting and overseas expansion under former CEO Carlos Tavares. Tavares focused heavily on shifting production to lower-cost markets like Mexico and channeling resources into Europe, where profitability has been constrained by weak demand.
In the US, Stellantis is aiming to restore the strength of its Jeep lineup, while also exploring new investment in Dodge — which could pave the way for a new Dodge V8 muscle car — and potentially a revival of the Chrysler brand. Sources cautioned that discussions remain ongoing and plans could still change.
“As part of the preparations for the company’s strategy update and capital markets day next year, the CEO is leading a thorough evaluation of all future investments,” a Stellantis spokesperson said in a statement, without providing further details.
The spending drive highlights Stellantis’s renewed emphasis on the US, where competition with General Motors and Ford remains fierce, and where Jeep SUVs and Ram pickups account for a significant share of profits. It also reflects the balancing act the company faces as it seeks to maintain its traditional brands while preparing for the costly transition to electric vehicles.
