A new survey highlights a growing disconnect between Americans’ stated support for U.S. manufacturing and the domestic products made vs. their actual purchasing habits, as well as persistent doubts about whether businesses are meeting public expectations.
The Bentley-Gallup Business in Society Survey 2025, which polled more than 3,000 U.S. adults, found that while Americans increasingly view business as a force for good, they remain skeptical about corporate intentions and impact.
According to the findings, 65% of respondents said businesses have a positive effect on people’s lives — a 10-point increase since 2022. A striking 87% agreed that companies have the power to improve lives, yet only 60% believed businesses are effectively using that power. Just 43% said they trust businesses’ intentions.
The survey also underscored Americans’ strong support for domestic manufacturing. Respondents expressed a desire for companies to do more to promote U.S.-made goods, strengthen local communities, and support workers.
“The Bentley-Gallup Business in Society Report provides clear, quantifiable insights about Americans’ attitudes toward business,” said Bentley University President E. LaBrent Chrite, Ph.D. “Business leaders who understand what Americans expect and want from companies can better navigate through these turbulent times.”
The findings point to both progress and challenges for corporate America. While confidence in business is rising, the results suggest that companies must bridge the gap between perception and performance — particularly when it comes to delivering on promises that align with public values.
E. LaBrent Chrite added: “It’s clear that Americans’ expectations for businesses have expanded beyond just making a profit. The Bentley-Gallup survey provides a real-time view of where Americans think businesses are succeeding at making a positive difference in the world — and where they are falling short. These insights are invaluable because knowing what customers expect is the first step for good business executives to lead successfully.”
