Tata Steel has decided to reduce steel production at UK and Netherlands Corus factories as a result of the economic crisis and resulting fall in demand.

Output is to be cut by up to 20 per cent (one million metric tonnes) over the next three months.

“We are taking appropriate steps to optimise our operations and protect our sound financial position over the next few months,” said Philippe Varin, chief executive of Corus.
