Last month, The Manufacturer Live 2017 culminated with The Manufacturer MX Awards, a glittering evening of prestigious awards, great company, food and music.
We take a look behind The Manufacturer MX Awards and provide a glimpse of the hard work and dedication involved in choosing the best of the best of British manufacturing.
As word spreads about the importance of the awards, the judges heard from dozens of companies – who must nominate themselves – that the judging process offers very real and valuable external validation and benchmarking.
In other words, just the process of entering and being assessed reaps real returns for all entrants. This helps to explain why, compared to 2016, there was an impressive 23% increase in the number of companies entering the 2017 awards.
9,000 – the number of miles travelled by the Manufacturer’s eight judging team as they fanned out across Britain for site visits to inspirational British manufacturers.
The rise in the number of new entrants was reflected in the awards shortlist, where 33% of companies were new finalists.
The judges listened to 1,110 minutes (or 18.5 hours) of presentations across a multitude of categories. Each company visited is subjected to the most rigorous inspection process of any awards systems in the sector – in fact, as far as we know, The Manufacturer’s is the only true, on-the-spot awards inspection process.
A total of 49 rigorous site visits were completed. Much of the travel was by road and rail, but for the more distant companies six UK airports were used and the judges stayed in 96 hotel rooms.
On the awards night, 15 awards were presented in 13 diverse manufacturing categories, plus winner and runner up for the ultimate award of The Manufacturer of the Year.

On November 16, The elite of the UK manufacturing community gathered last night to celebrate The Manufacturer MX Awards 2017.
The announcement of the successful finalists culminated in the reveal of the winners of the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year Award 2017, which was picked up by McLaren Automotive.
McLaren Automotive also picked up two other categories at The Manufacturer MX Awards 2017 – Innovation & Design, and Smart Factory.
