We at The Manufacturer have published our 2022 Opus, a showcase of the shortlisted and winning companies from The Manufacturer MX (Manufacturing Excellence) Awards which took place in Liverpool during last year’s Digital Manufacturing Week.

If there was ever a time to champion the excellence and innovation within UK manufacturing, this is most definitely it. Events of the last two years have created unprecedented challenges for UK manufacturers, from the trials and tribulations of Brexit, to supply chain disruption and the ongoing issue of skills within the sector. This is to say nothing of the impact of the dreaded ‘C’ word. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact manufacturing and industry, and in many cases, has changed the face of business forever.
Necessity is the mother of invention however, and it was inspiring to see how the manufacturing community not only came together to weather the storm, but collaborated in fighting back against the pandemic in the form ventilator and PPE manufacture. COVID-19 also meant that many manufacturers pressed the digitalisation accelerator in earnest, turning to digital technologies to help improve their operational resilience and efficiency and support their customer growth strategies. More than two-thirds of manufacturers (67%) accelerated their adoption of digital technologies as a result of the pandemic.
TMMX Awards 2021 was therefore, the perfect opportunity for us to doff the cap to those in the sector that have responded to the challenges with gusto, pivoted with agility and passed the test of the last two years with flying colours. That’s not to say the awards were handed out on a plate – far from it. Entries had to meet a demanding set of criteria and benchmarks developed in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). And then the finalists had to endure a further round of grilling at the hands of judges whose job it is to test that self-assessment against the reality they find on the factory floor.
The process culminated at a gala event at Digital Manufacturing Week where we welcomed the great and the good of the sector to help us celebrate as the award winners were announced. The Opus helps to further champion an industry that does not always get the credit it deserves. So please help us share the message of the brilliant companies mentioned in these pages by displaying this document in your reception or sharing it with your local schools.
