Sector skills council Semta has issued a warning to employers that time is running out to take advantage of a government grant of £1000 to SMEs who take on an unemployed graduate.
Semta won funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills’ Employer Investment Fund to support this scheme which aims to get 200 qualified but unemployed young people into work.
Companies do not have to commit to take the graduate on permanently. A minimum of three months guaranteed employment is required.
The grant is open to businesses with up to 249 employees up to March 17.
According to Semta data only 15% of SMEs in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering employ graduates today. Semta’s aims to see this rise to 17% over the next three years.
