Following a torrid year, Toyota's woes continue with the global recall of 1.9m cars, including 19,000 in the UK, owing to fears over potential fuel leaks.
It is thought that slight cracks have begun to appear in the fuel pipes on the Toyota Avensis and Lexus IS250 and that these could widen and cause a fuel leak. Toyota says no accidents have occurred as a result but that the fault should be fixed by mechanics, which the Japanese car giant – the largest car maker in the world by volume – will pay for. The repair will take three to four hours.
Toyota says it is working with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa) in the UK to recall the affected vehicles here, which are some 15,500 Avensis models from between 2002 andf 2008 and 3,500 IS 250s from August 2007 and February 2009.
This is Toyota’s single biggest recall in over six years, although the firm has had to recall a total of almost 16m cars since late 2009 because of a variety of problems including sticking accelerators and braking faults.
Toyota manufactures the Avensis and Auris models at its factory in Burnaston, Derby and hasa further manufacturing facility in North Wales.
