Dr Somdip Dey, a lecturer in Data Science at York St John University, has used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse trends in electronic dance music (EDM) to develop a whole new sub-genre – Infinity Wave.
The AI focused on data metrics such as festival lineups and attendance, streaming data, social and media coverage, influences and music popularity to understand the growing trends in EDM and to pinpoint what sounds, structures and production techniques were resonating most with listeners.
The AI findings then enabled Dr Dey, who also goes under the moniker of InteliDey, to identify where EDM is heading and to create the single: ‘I Don’t Think – Infinity Wave’, using traditional music-making techniques.
Blending the styles of melodic techno, future rave and progressive house, the new genre has huge potential for the university as it showcases York St John’s research capabilities in both the music and data science departments.
“As a lecturer in Data Science at York St John and a producer pushing the boundaries in AI-driven music research, Infinity Wave presents an exciting intersection of music and technology that directly benefits our students,” said Dr Dey, who is also an MIT Innovator Under 35 in AI & Robotics.
“My research into AI-driven music analysis showcases how machine learning and big data can be applied to the creative industries. Students at York St John are increasingly exploring how AI can generate insights beyond traditional sectors, and Infinity Wave offers a real-world case study.
“Infinity Wave also introduces an entirely new production methodology that bridges traditional electronic music production with AI-enhanced creative insights. I actively encourage students to experiment with AI as a tool for ideation and sound design.”
To assist students further, Dr Dey is currently building an online tutorial to teach how to use AI to analyse music data, so that others can also leverage such technologies to enhance their music creativity.
Going forward, Dr Dey already has a number of new music projects underway utilising Infinity Wave, including collaborations with other producers, as well as plans to develop live performances that fully immerse audiences in the Infinity Wave experience –using visuals, lighting and evolving landscapes.
