US aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis has launched an independently certified aluminium designed for the beverage can market with a minimum 90% recycled aluminium.
The evercanTM aluminium beverage can body sheet allows beverage companies to deliver soft drinks, beer and other drinks with lower carbon emissions than existing aluminium cans, the company claims.
The new aluminium sheet has been certified for high-recycled content by SCS Global Services, a US-based environmental and sustainability consultancy. The firm works in food quality certification, auditing, testing and standards development.
Phil Martens, Novelis president and CEO said, “Our evercan high-recycled content beverage can body sheet, backed by the industry’s first independent certification program, represents tremendous progress in sustainable consumer products packaging. This is an important step toward delivering on our ultimate vision of an aluminium can with up to 100 percent recycled content.”
Atlanta, Georgia-based Novelis is initially offering aluminium can body sheet guaranteed to contain at least 90% recycled content. When combined with the can end made of a different alloy during the can making process, the evercan will permit drinks companies to market their products in standard 12-oz (US) aluminium cans certified as made from a minimum of 70% recycled content.
The product is commercially available now in North America and Europe, and will be available worldwide later this year.
