Around ninety workers at the Ford factory in Southampton went on strike this week to protest against the company’s plans to cut production of its Transit van at the plant.
Ford has previously announced that production of the Transit at the site will be cut from 75,000 to 35,000 from 2011 and that the move will incur job losses in the city.
On Monday around a fifth of the 500 workers on site downed tools at midday in remonstration. The move was labelled as “unconstitutional” and with “no legal basis” by Ford.
The plant, in Swaythling, a Southampton suburb, employs 1,100 people overall but there has been no official word on how many jobs are to be cut.
