An academic from Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), part of the University of Warwick, has been awarded the 2026 Beilby Medal and Prize, one of the most distinguished honours in applied science and engineering.
Dr Han Zhang, Associate Professor (Reader) in Multifunctional Polymers and Composites, has spent more than a decade specialising in polymers and composites, with research spanning energy-efficient manufacturing, sustainable materials and smart composite systems. His work has focused on developing practical technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of polymer and composite manufacturing and maintenance.
Among his key contributions are out-of-the-oven processing routes that reduce energy demand while maintaining structural performance, as well as embedding electrical sensing capabilities within composites to enable both process monitoring and structural health monitoring. He has also led efforts to create composite materials that can be repaired, reused and dismantled for recycling, supporting a more circular materials economy. In addition, his research has explored transforming agricultural waste into composite materials as alternatives to single-use plastic packaging, particularly in developing countries.
Speaking about his work, Dr Zhang said it demonstrates that “we do not have to choose between performance and sustainability in polymer and composite engineering,” adding that advances in processing and materials design can deliver energy efficiency, durability and circularity simultaneously.
Reacting to the award, he said he felt “truly honoured and humbled,” noting the calibre of previous recipients and their impact on shaping entire research fields. He also highlighted the role of collaboration in his achievements, thanking his research group, colleagues and wider support network.
Dr Zhang added that WMG provides “an exceptional environment” for translating fundamental research into real-world industrial impact through close collaboration with industry partners.
Professor Kerry Kirwan, Dean of WMG, congratulated Dr Zhang, describing him as “a true frontrunner in his field” and an example of how pioneering research can drive meaningful progress.
Looking ahead, Dr Zhang said he aims to develop the next generation of intelligent and sustainable polymer and composite materials, while continuing to address practical challenges faced by industry and society and inspiring future materials scientists.
Established in 1930 and named after British industrial chemist Sir George Thomas Beilby, the Beilby Medal and Prize is jointly awarded by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. It is awarded annually to a scientist or engineer whose work demonstrates exceptional practical significance in fields including chemical engineering, applied science and energy efficiency.
Dr Zhang will receive the medal at the Innovations in Polymeric Coatings Conference on 17 June at SCI headquarters in London, where he is also scheduled to deliver a lecture on his research.
