Young people across the UK are being challenged to develop solutions to issues ranging from extreme heat and artificial intelligence to food waste as part of this year’s Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, which begins on Monday.

Now in its 14th year, the national campaign runs from 9 to 13 November, showcasing engineering and technology careers to inspire the next generation. Students will explore climate change, artificial intelligence and food waste through 3 real-world design challenges under the theme ‘Shape our future’.

The activities encourage students to think like engineers, identifying problems, exploring ideas and developing creative solutions. They are supported by career stories from engineers and technicians working across different sectors. This helps young people discover the variety of roles available and see how engineering and technology can make a difference in the world.

Tomorrow’s Engineers Week helps young people discover how engineering and technology shape the world around us. We want young people from all backgrounds to see how their interests and ideas could take them into engineering and technology. There are so many ways they can make a difference.

EngineeringUK research shows 46% of young people are interested in an engineering career, but only 25% think it fits who they are. The Week aims to bridge that gap by connecting their interests, skills and desire to make a difference with engineering and technology careers.

Teachers can access free activities and resources at www.eukeducation.org.uk/teweek. Last year, over 60,000 young people took part in Tomorrow’s Engineers Week school activities.

Alongside school activities, employers, professional engineering institutions and engineering and technology professionals are invited to share career stories on social media showing how their work shapes our future.

Using #TEWeek26, organisations and individuals can show young people the range of engineering and technology careers, the people behind them and where they could fit in. A supporters’ toolkit makes it easy to share these stories through their networks. Find the toolkit here: www.engineeringuk.com/teweeksupporter.

Tamzin Caffrey, Head of Communications at EngineeringUK, said: “Tomorrow’s Engineers Week helps young people discover how engineering and technology shape the world around us. “That’s why we’re bringing these opportunities to life through engaging activities and asking engineers and technicians to share their stories on socials. Relatable role models can broaden young people’s horizons and help them picture themselves as part of that future.
